Thyroid Imbalances Q & A

What Does the Thyroid Gland Do?

The thyroid gland and parathyroid glands are located in the throat and are responsible for the release of many different hormones that affect a person's metabolism. An imbalance in the amount of thyroid hormones that are produced can lead to a variety of symptoms. If too much of the hormones are produced, hyperthyroidism results. This leads to an overactive metabolism that results in excessive weight loss, inability to sleep, and high levels of anxiety.

What is Hypothyroidism?

Hypothyroidism results if hormone production drops below normal levels. This condition can result in abnormal weight gain, constant fatigue, and depression. It can also result in other bodily processes becoming much slower and causing a multitude of other health conditions. If an imbalance of the thyroid hormones does occur, it is important to work with a physician to bring them back into balance as soon as possible. Thyroid hormones that affect the body's metabolic rate also effect the cardiovascular system and can have a negative and very devastating effect on the heart.

How are Thyroid Conditions Treated?

Treating thyroid conditions often involve disabling the thyroid gland with radioactive material and then removing it from the body. Once this occurs, the person will no longer produce any thyroid hormone, and for the body to function normally, synthetic forms of the hormone must be taken in supplement form. For individuals who have had their gland completely removed, they will be required to remain in the synthetic form of thyroid hormone for the rest of their lives. A doctor will have closely to monitor the dosage of the supplemental hormone to ensure the person is getting the right amount at every stage of their life. Diet and other lifestyle changes will have to be considered to help maintain the delicate balance that keeps the body thriving and in good health.
